We provide guidance and support to ensure funeral arrangements follow Islamic traditions with dignity and care.

Funeral & Burial Arrangements – Procedure

Ensuring a smooth and dignified funeral process, this guide outlines the necessary steps for an Islamic burial.

  • Inform family and friends.
  • Contact a local mosque to coordinate body pickup, washing (Ghusl), and the Janaazah (Funeral) prayer.
  • Schedule the Janaazah prayer, preferably after Duhr, considering daylight and weather conditions.
  • Contact the cemetery to provide details and complete necessary paperwork.

If Death Occurs at Home

  • Call the family doctor (or the last attending doctor) to issue a Medical Certificate of Death (Form 16).
  • If a doctor is unavailable, call 911—the body will be transported to a hospital where Form 16 will be issued.

If Death Occurs in a Hospital

  • The hospital will issue the Medical Certificate of Death (Form 16) and keep the body in the morgue until formalities are completed.
  • Obtain a Statement of Death (Form 15) from a mosque or City Hall.
  • Contact the cemetery to arrange burial plot purchase and grave opening/closing.
  • Submit Form 15 & Form 16 to Ottawa City Hall to receive a Burial Permit (Death Registration).
  • Visit Ottawa City Hall (10 Laurier Ave West, 24/7 service).
  • After hours: Inform the security guard for burial permit assistance.
  • During business hours (8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, Mon-Fri), you can also visit:
  • Orléans Client Service Centre – 255 Centrum Blvd., Suite 11
  • Ben Franklin Place Client Service Centre – 101 Centrepointe Dr.
  • Kanata Client Service Centre – 580 Terry Fox Dr.
  • Fee: $64 (Make copies of important documents).
  • The hospital will release the body only after the Burial Permit is issued.
  • The cemetery will not open the grave without a Burial Permit. (Exception: In cases of fetal death, a permit may not be required.)
