The Ottawa Muslim Cemetery is a registered non-profit, Muslim cemetery providing dignified Islamic burial in the Nation’s Capital at one of the most affordable cost in Canada.
The Ottawa Muslim Cemetery (OMC) was established to serve the growing Muslim community in the Ottawa-Gatineau region by providing a burial space that fully follows Islamic funeral rites. Founded as a not-for-profit, charitable organization (Charitable Registration No. 894375187RR0001), OMC is a vision that took shape in 1994 when efforts began to establish a Muslim cemetery in the Nation’s Capital.
After years of dedicated fundraising and perseverance by the community, a suitable plot of land was acquired in 2005. By 2008, the cemetery obtained its official provincial license. Today, OMC stands as a Muslim-owned and operated cemetery, ensuring that generations of families can be laid to rest in full accordance with Islamic principles.

The Ottawa Muslim Cemetery is dedicated to serving the Muslim community by ensuring proper Islamic burial practices are observed with respect, dignity, and full adherence to religious principles. We exist to guarantee that every Muslim in the Ottawa-Gatineau region has access to a dignified final resting place, regardless of their financial situation.
As a registered charity, we operate with full transparency and community accountability. No shareholders, no profit motive, just a community caring for its own.
Establishing Ottawa’s first Muslim cemetery was a three-decade effort driven entirely by community volunteers, donors, and a shared conviction that every Muslim deserves a dignified burial in their home city.
Community leaders and volunteers began efforts to establish the first dedicated Muslim cemetery in the Nation's Capital. Fundraising campaigns were launched across Ottawa's mosques and community organizations.
After over a decade of fundraising and perseverance, a suitable plot of land was secured. This milestone was the result of thousands of community members contributing what they could.
The cemetery received its official provincial cemetery license based on Islamic law, confirming that all burials would adhere to proper Islamic guidelines, including Qibla alignment.
Ottawa Muslim Cemetery officially opens for burials. Phase I provides space for approximately 5,000 graves, serving as the primary burial ground for Ottawa's Muslim community.
Phase II officially opens in January 2024, adding 4,500 new burial spaces. In the first year alone, over 300 burials took place, reflecting the growing need and the community's trust in OMC.
Planning is underway for Phase III, which will add a further 4,500 burial spaces. Community donations are essential to make this a reality for future generations.
